Library Launches Book-to-Film Series

Feb 18th, 2021 at 2:41 PM

The Gates Public Library is excited to launch The Art of Adaptation, a unique monthly book/film discussion series starting in April.  The series explores movie adaptations of books.  Each month, participants will read a designated book and then watch the movie version.  On the second Wednesday evening of the month at 7:00 p.m., we will gather by Zoom for an informal discussion, exploring how the adaptation stacked up, and the strengths and weaknesses of different storytelling media.  The diverse books cover the period 1939 to 2010, and the movie versions encompass a variety of genres, including drama, musical, horror, and works based on true stories. The books and movies are available to borrow free from Gates Public Library, or to download/stream from the library’s OverDrive and Hoopla services. The series starts on April 14 with the 1963 movie The Haunting, based on Shirley Jackson's 1959 book The Haunting of Hill House. To see the complete list of titles, download our PDF Schedule.

Take Your Child to the Library Day

Feb 3rd, 2021 at 4:38 PM

Saturday February 6th is Take Your Child to the Library Day! Library staff are excited to celebrate with you with an open invitation to stop by the Gates Public Library on Saturday! There will be a full day, drop-in Library Word Hunt (with sharks!) much like the Turkey Word Hunt we did back in November. There will be 10 sharks hidden around the building with library themed words! Pick up a word sheet and record all 10 words with their corresponding sharks. Once you’ve done this, stop at the front desk to claim your prize! This program does not require registration and will be going on the whole day! To keep the fun going, there will be a magnetic fishing game set up in the atrium with prizes for all the brave fishermen and fisherwomen! The best part yet, our very own library shark, Phinneas, will be making an appearance around 2 pm! Stop by to give him a high five and take a photo or two! He can’t wait to see you! We are looking forward to celebrating Take Your Child to the Library Day with all of you!
