What do you do at the Gates Public Library? I am one of the two referral clerks whose primary responsibility is working with patrons. I perform "library triage" – I can tell you who can answer your questions, where you can find the items you need, help you with account and billing issues etc. I oversee the workflow on the circulation desk and back up the aides when things get busy, and carry out a wide variety of other tasks as necessary. What book has changed your life and how? "1984" by George Orwell. It opened my eyes to what can happen if we don't stand up for what we believe in, and also introduced me to the dystopian genre which remains my favorite fictional area to this day. What book made the biggest impact on you as a child? The "Famous Five" series by Enid Blyton. Wait, what? Kids can go off alone and have adventures and live alone on islands and catch burglars and foil smuggling rings and not have curfews? I lived vicariously through the Famous Five, in particular Georgina, for several years. You wake up to find your house is burning down. You only have time to save one object. What is it? Assuming the people and dogs can get themselves out, my camera bag. All the photographs I've taken since going digital in 2007 plus a vast amount of scanned family photographs going back to the 1960's are in there on flash drives and SD cards. What is your spirit guide animal? I don't believe in spirit guides but I like otters so I'll go with the otter. Or maybe the octopus. They're really smart. Or okapis. They're one of nature's oddballs. Actually I'd pretty much settle for any animal that begins with "O." All of the titles under "Staff Recommendations" were selected by Kim.
