Cassettes, Compact Discs & Records at the Gates Public Library

We have an extensive collection of recordings covering a full spectrum of musical tastes. We circulate both CDs and cassettes.

The cassette and CD titles are browseable near the back wall of the library. Children’s recordings are shelved separately in the children’s section.

Our library uses expanded ANSCR classification scheme to group similar genres. Examples of commonly used ANSCR categories: B (opera), EA (general orchestral), L (sound tracks – movies & television), MA (popular, easy listening), MC (country), MJ (jazz, new age), MR (rock, rap, R&B), X (instructional). The entire ANSCR chart is posted in the music section. If you have trouble locating an item, please ask a librarian at the reference desk.

Titles or songs can be most easily located in the online catalog adding the additional keyword “sound”. You may also designate the type of material by clicking on the “search options” button.

Most adult recordings circulate for 3 weeks, 10 items per card, with a 25¢ overdue per day charge and are not renewable. Many variations in circulation terms exist for other types (e.g. children’s audio or multipart sets). Please consult our Circulation Policies Brochure for details.

Please handle these materials with utmost care. For your protection we always check for signs of damage or unusual wear at return, as well as for missing parts.

Your suggestions are encouraged. Please consult the walk around kiosk for Billboard magazine’s top recordings list which shows what we own or have on order. Please forward your suggestions for adult recordings to Melissa McHenry, Media Services Librarian, and to Donna Peasley, Children Services Librarian, for children’s recordings.
