COMPUTER AND INTERNET TRAINING AT THE GATES PUBLIC LIBRARY

  • Computer and Internet Training Classes are held at the following times:
  • Wednesday and Saturday mornings from 9:15 - 10:15
  • June, July and August: Wednesday mornings and Tuesday evenings
  • The classes are free to Gates residents.
  • Residents of other towns pay $7.00 for each class. Payment must be made at the time of registration.
  • Classes are limited to four, so each student receives a lot of individual attention.

  • If you are a Senior Citizen, you may be interested in the Senior S.I.G., which is held on the second Wednesday of each month. More information is available by calling 247-6446, extension 285, or requesting the Senior S.I.G. flyer while at the Library. The Senior S.I.G. is free and open to all Monroe County residents. When you call, ask for the Internet/Technology Librarian

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?  

For Beginners--Mousing Around:

  • No prior computer or Internet experience is necessary. Smiling computer--link to mouse training tutorial
  • Terminology: don't worry if you don't know what is meant by a hyperlink, a search engine, the World Wide Web, or other Internet terminology. We will explain it all!
  • Holding and moving the mouse and “clicking” the mouse button.
  • Quick and easy ways to navigate the Internet.
  • How to use the services offered at LibraWeb, the web site of the Monroe County Library System.
  • If you have specific questions, we will answer them.
  • You will use this link: mouse exercises to access the Gates Public Library online mouse tutorial!

For Intermediates--Intermediate Internet:

  • Are you frustrated with the difficulty of using search engines and locating information on the Internet? In "Intermediate Internet" you will practice more sophisticated methods for locating web sites and doing Internet research.
  • Prior experience using the mouse and keyboard is required before taking "Intermediate Internet".  

At the Advanced Level--Advanced Internet Searching:

  • Learn advanced Internet searching skills and methods of evaluating web pages as research sources. Click on the graphic to go to the set of pages on website evaluation.
  • Try out image searching and online shopping, using some of the additional features in Google.
  • You must already have experience searching the Internet as well as good computer skills to take "Advanced Internet Searching". 

Searching Reference Databases: (available upon request)

  • Apply your Internet searching skills to other databases the library makes available.
  • Search for business or health information, the full text of magazine articles, and even a good book to read!
  • You must already have experience searching the Internet as well as good computer skills to take "Searching Reference Databases".
  • “Searching Reference Databases” is offered as a self guided online tutorial.

Set Up a Yahoo E-mail Account

  • Do you want to use e-mail but don’t know how to get an account ?
  • Set up and learn to use a Yahoo e-mail account that you can check from any computer with an Internet connection.
  • A general knowledge of Internet navigation techniques such as the use of links, online forms, and drop-down menus is helpful but not required.
