Literacy ServicesThe Gates Public Library is dedicated to promoting literacy and reading skills for all ages. We provide access to a variety of materials designed to assist Literacy Volunteers and those seeking to improve their literacy skills. The library has consistently won grants to develop our literacy collections, thanks primarily to the efforts of Adult Services Librarian Nancy Blanda, who was honored by former First Lady Barbara Bush for her efforts to further literacy. Send a comment or suggestion to Mrs. Blanda regarding the library's literacy efforts. Literacy CollectionThe library has literacy-related books, cassettes and videos housed in a special section of the collection. There are books written specifically for new adult readers and readers of English as a second language. These include books for recreational reading as well as for improving literacy, language and life skills. The library also receives News for You, a newspaper for new readers. Audio-Visual MaterialsThe library's Literacy Section has been expanded to include audiocassettes and VHS videocassettes. The tapes include selections on
You might find, for example, a video on learning the sounds of letters, or a tape on sharpening writing skills. Cassettes and videos may be borrowed or used in the library. Literacy and ESL teachers may arrange for extended loans for some Literacy audio-visual materials through the Library Director. The audio-visual collections were funded by two New York State Library Services Outreach grants. Tutoring Space Literacy tutors and their students are able to request use of
two private study areas in the library. The story hour room is the first
choice for
tutors and their students, but if it is not available, a tutor may request
space in the library's larger meeting room. The Library Board has authorized
the Library
Director to make this private study space available as part of their ongoing
promotion of literacy. Available for use in the story hour room are a VCR,
a television, and a cassette player to allow the tutors and students to make
use
of the audio-visual literacy materials in the library collection. Registration
is required to use either one of the study rooms and reservations
are recommended. |
