OVERVIEW OF LONG RANGE GOALS ACHIEVEMENTS 1998 – 2002

1.      TO INCREASE COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS AND OUTREACH IN ORDER TO INCREASE GATES RESIDENTS PARTICIPATION IN LIBRARY SERVICES

¨      1998: 5 year outreach plan developed; outreach brochure revised & advertised library for 1st time in Gates recreation brochure. Tinseltown outreach display began in 1997 continued with semi-monthly display changes.

¨      1999: Seniors targeted for outreach in 1999. PC for Seniors, a rebuilt library computer, placed in annex for use by 3 large Seniors groups that meet in the annex.

¨      2000: Adults targeted for outreach in 2000. Shut in service planning begins

¨      2001: Teens targeted for outreach in 2001. Shut in service for Gates Seniors begins. Recreation’s bussing of teens from summer playgrounds to library successful new service.

¨      2002: Children targeted for outreach in 2002. 

2.      TO PROVIDE HIGH INTEREST HIGH DEMAND MATERIALS IN A VARIETY OF FORMATS FOR GATES RESIDENTS OF ALL AGES

¨      1998: Materials budget to be increased to 15% of budget from present 11.5% of budget. In every year of this plan, each librarian with collection responsibilities targets a high use area of the collection to analyze and develop further [building on collection strengths] Begin circulating CD-Roms.

¨      1999: Materials budget increased to 12% of budget

¨      2000: Materials budget increased to 13% of budget

¨      2001: Materials budget increased to 14% of budget. DVDs  very popular new format for library.

¨      2002: Materials budget increased to target goal of 15% of budget. GPL ranks in top 7% of US libraries in national public library study.

3.      TO PROMOTE THE LIBRARY AS THE PREMIER SOURCE FOR ALL THE COMMUNITY’S INFORMATIONAL AND REFERENCE NEEDS

¨      1998: 2 reference brochures revised; reference collection promoted in newspaper publicity

¨      1999: 2 new brochures promote databases available in-house and remotely. More reference collection publicity printed. Wellness Fair for Seniors held in Annex

¨      2000: Notebook of local job vacancies new service available in Job-Career section

¨      2001: Reference brochures updated; more reference publicity in local newspaper.

¨      2002: Reference promotion continues

4.      TO TAKE A COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP ROLE WITH TODAY’S INFORMATIONAL TECHNOLOGY[ELECTRONIC DOORWAY LIBRARY AND INTERNET SPECIFICALLY TARGETED] AND TO INTERFACE WITH LOCAL EDUCATIONAL EFFORTS INVOLVING SUCH TECHNOLOGY

¨      1998: Developed training scripts for online catalog and Internet training for public; technology plan developed to meet e-rate requirements; library invited to participate in 1999 cooperative grant. Gordon Black survey shows public wants more electronic resources at home. Public PC added as new service.

¨      1999: 1st small group hands on training for online catalog and Internet offered. Gates asked to join Gates-Chili K-12 Technology Implementation Team. Library benefits from BOCES cooperative grant. Public scanner added for public PC.

¨      2000: Senior SIG program, monthly cooperative program with Rochester Free-Net, begins. Leads to 2 other Senior SIG offerings in east side public libraries. Library active participant in Gates-Chili’s K-12 Technology Implementation Team. Expanded web page with new domain name, www.gateslibrary.org allows free email for all Gates librarians and clerks. Gates one of two libraries to participate in county E-book grant. 3rd public training class offered on Reference Databases. 2nd public PC added.

¨      2001: Library participates in 2nd E-book grant with great county wide publicity. Gates Public Library wins 1st Pied Piper Award for creativity with Internet = national recognition!

¨      2002: Library request to have Gates Chili’s web site point to our databases realized as our joint technology goal for this long range plan.

5.      TO EXPAND LIBRARY EFFORTS TO SUPPORT THE EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS OF THE COMMUNITY

¨      1998: Gates students in 5th, 8th and 12th grades surveyed as to public library perceptions & needs

¨      1999: 3rd grade classes at both Armstrong and Irving visit library for 1st time as a group

¨      2000: 3rd grade class visits continued

¨      2001: All Gates elementary schools participate in 3rd grade visits.

¨      2002: Library efforts to work with local Gates schools continued with survey from 1998 repeated to observe changes in youth perception of public library services.

6.      TO DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT A COMPREHENSIVE PLAN OF SERVICE FOR GATES PARENTS WITH CHILDREN UNDER FIVE

¨      1998: Great NY Read Aloud program; Books for Babies program starts; storytime for toddlers offered.

 ¨      1999: Parents, Preschoolers and Popcorn program developed to replace formerly grant funded preschool program, HOPE [Helping Our Parents Educate]

¨      2000: Outreach to Gates day care & nursery schools planned

¨      2001: Excellent results in outreach to Gates day care & nursery schools; another excellent Great NY Read Aloud program held; toy collection added.

¨      2002: Pre-school efforts continued
